Springtime in the Rockies. The sun is high, the winter was wet and the early blossoms of our desert plants shine golden in the first sunlight to hit the high mesa of the Placitas open space. It was close to freezing, but once the sun was up its warmth soaked into the rocks and landscape.
Every Sunday morning (before dawn) I head out to the foothills of the Sandias to walk Finn and Sophie our, dogs. I like climbing to this ridge just as the sun rises to light it up.

Trail to the spiral

Someone has taken the time to build a rock spiral at the end of this trail on this escarpment overlooking the rocky desert terrain to the west.

Fecundity, an exhibit I'm currently in opened 3.1.19 in the Johnathan Abrams MD Art Gallery, a satellite gallery for the University of New Mexico Museum.

I invited Jane Abrams http://www.janeabramsstudio.com/ to share the space with me as our work represents our fascination with the richness and beauty of botanical life, but is expressed in two very different manners. Her's luscious and rich, mine spare and obsessive.

The images shown are of my portion of the gallery walls. In the next couple of weeks I will photograph the show more completely and post.

Preparing my studio/ gallery for another ACOG (Anne Cooper Occasional Gallery) event this Saturday.   http://annecooperstudio.com/ACOG.html

Which means mainly cleaning up and putting away my projects. This show features the work of two artists who have not had many opportunities to show locally. My focus with the shows here is to celebrate creativity and community. Pop-up one night affairs (2 hours). We all have great fun.

I have to convert my zendo (meditation room) into a gallery for the event. A beautiful space about 15' square with a south window and 10' high ceilings.

Artists in this show are Debi Dodge (encaustic paintings) and Robert Wilson (fabricated steel).

My first material love, clay.
I was a potter in the 70's in Houston. So returning to clay all these years later is natural. This clay is called chocolate and will fire a dark cocoa brown. These  are 3"x 3"x 3" cubes. Test pieces. The upside down piece is being fabricated and is still wet, waiting for it to dry before I seal the seams.

The pieces are slightly burnished. Once completely dry they will be bisque fired. Not sure what surface I will put on them. Glaze? Encaustic? Metal leaf?

 Stay tuned.

This Sunday's walk on Bear Canyon Trail, Sandia foothills. Wicked winds, very beautiful.

Mid March I flew to Houston (my hometown, left there in 1984) to visit a friend. Coming from the desert still shrouded in brown of winter, the startling green greeted me.

We visited the Menil Collection and the newly opened Menil Drawing Institute with a stunning exhibit of Roni Horn's drawings. https://www.menil.org/exhibitions/297-roni-horn-when-i-breathe-i-draw-part-i
The architect is Johnston Marklee.

the wooden siding of the building reflects the spare and rich detail of the structure.

Of course we spent time in the Menil Collection. Their Alaskan art collection is wonderful.

This carved face from walrus tusk is about two inches high.

Each Thursday a friend and I visit with Jed (pictured), Smokey (Tennessee walker), and Cleo (donkey). Our time with the equines is precious. I've always been terrified of horses, whereas my friend grew up with them. From her I've learned about their beauty, serenity, sweetness and intelligence. A gift.
